Question:
Retainer has been lost for 3 weeks: My eight year old son had an expander. He now has a retainer.

We found out today that he lost it three weeks ago and never told us. Is all the work he has done ruined? ... Visitor from Verona

Answer:
It's possible..... the only way to determine the extent of re-migration of the teeth is to consult with the orthdontist or dentist.

If significant movement has occurred, a different retainer configuration may help... rather than restart ortho treatment all over again.

One of the biggest reasons retainers shouldn't be used on teeth that have migrated too far is the possibility of damaging the tooth roots..... which can't be undone. Moving teeth "too fast" needs to be avoided....which is why ortho treatments typically require several months to a couple of years to complete.
