Orthodontics Ask The Dentist Richard Winter Question:
Will fixing an overbite cause the jaw to jet out? My daughter just had a consultation for her overbite.

She has beautifully straight teeth and a beautiful face, but an overbite that is about a category 7 or 8 (whatever that means). The orthodontist is suggesting a metal appliance that will bring her bottom jaw forward.

The problem - I feel this changes her appearance and makes her jaw jet out and LARGE. My other children went to this ortho business when someone else was the orthodontist. They also had the severe overbite (runs in the family).

I have been very happy with how they turned out. Only rubberbands were used. Is there not an alternative to this new appliance? I just want her to look like herself - not change her appearance. ....Visitor from WI

Answer:
These are valid concerns that need to be addressed with the orthodontist!

I don't have photos, models or records-he does. If you have concerns, express them and see what the answer is going to be. If you are still unhappy go get a second opinion.
