My son is 15 years old and his orthodontist is suggesting that he get two of his maxillary teeth removed, #5 and #12 before braces and then the braces will be placed to push his teeth back to correct his overbite.
Is this the right decision for my son? ... Visitor from Saint Petersburg
Extraction orthodontics is a controversial procedure.
Many "extraction patients" don't like the cosmetic appearance of their teeth because it doesn't appear natural. Many patients, during adulthood, often choose to have their teeth moved back into their natural positions and have dental implants placed in the appropriate positions.
Get some consults with other orthodontists who don't mind correcting things with traditional orthodontics.
If the overbite is significant and involves sizing problems between the upper and lower jaws, the traditional treatment calls for orthognathic surgery.... where the sizing problems are corrected the way they should be.
