FAQ:  Open Bite

Question:
Open Bite Advice: I am 24 and had my open bite since I was 11.

It has always been a problem to me as I can't eat anything like pizza or a bacon sandwich as my teeth do not cut the food and it ends very messy.

My question is will it get worse? It is probably at 4mm already, will it cause tmj or something? ...Visitor from Manchester UK

Answer:
Open bite problems aren't that difficult to treat if performed at a specific time during the developmental years.

Treatment needs that aren't addressed typically worsen over the years. Bad bite or orthodontic issues left untreated can actually destroy opposing teeth during adult years.

Over-closing of the jaw joints as well as an unbalanced bite can cause unusual wear problems for the tmj joints.... which can lead to migraine headaches and generalized jawbone pain.

Your best resource at this point is a Prosthodontist or an Orthodontist.
