Open bite problems: I have an openbite and am 28 years old.
I am having premature decay problems with my molars and need at least two removed due to cracks from pressure chewing. I was told they will wear out due to constant pressure from chewing.
I was wondering if I would benefit from dental implants or if they would wear out like my crowns are doing? I need at least 4 replaced and I don't want to waste money if I would benefit more from having partials.
I have no jaw pain and was told it would be better not getting any surgery now because it could cause TMJ joint problems since my teeth are used to the bite. So I am mainly wondering if implants would hold up the rest of my life or would they need replaced? ...Visitor from PA
Lots to think about with this question.
Anytime wear and fracture is an issue, one needs to be careful before making irreversible changes.
Without the benefit of an exam and very thorough diagnosis, it's difficult to suggest what you might do. I can say that you might need to consider that wear is just going to be part of your dental plan.
If you could spend $4000 - $5000 now, keep your natural teeth for the next 8-10 years, then revisit the whole issue, that might actually be a pretty good way to go.
Implants will continue to improve and with another 8-10 years under your belt to assess the wear, you might make better choices at that time. Make sure the molars really need to come out because once you start down that road, you will have to be making more complex decisions.
Our practice has treated many patients with unusual wear and tear issues. The use of custom fabricated metal biting surfaces and special night guards have helped these patients successfully control unusual wear issues while maintaining good dental function.
