FAQ:  Open Bite

Open Bite caused by Pacifier Use: I have a two 1/2 year old with an open bite fully attributed to pacifier use.

I thought it didn't happen until excessive use after three, but here we are! He used to use the NUK upside if that made a difference.

We have ended its use, but my pediatric dentist said the skeleton damage is done and there is nothing we can do for him. He's so young, is there anything to help correct this? ...A guilty mother. ...Visitor from GA

Take your child to a local orthodontist who can make growth predictions and deal with the open bite on daily basis.

Orthodontists use growth patterns and use appliances that modify the growth pattern to deal with many diverse forms of skeletal problems.

They may not be able to do much at this point, at this age, but alot can be done when they grow. As skeletal growth continues in the growing child and the habit is discontinued it may resolve itself.

Consult an orthodontist and you will have peace of mind. Don't worry too much... there are solutions and you are not the first or last parent with this problem.
