Jaw Pain Ask The Dentist Corinne Scalzitti Question:
Jaw - Ear Pain: I have TMJ and I wear a mouth guard at night.

For 2-1/2 weeks now, it feels like my jaw is out of alignment. I'm getting sharp pain in jaw joint and pain in the ear.

What next? Do I see my Dentist, a TMJ specialist or a Doctor? I have been taking aleve for inflammation, but it is not helping. ...Visitor from IN

Answer:
I like to treat patients with TMJ pain by doing a thorough check of their bite.

If the bite seems to be all right, I may try using valium, 2 mg. at night for 14 nights to try to relax the muscles and stop the pain. I will continue to check the bite because it may change as the muscles relax and the joint fits further into the socket.

I sometimes use an NTI (Nociceptive Trigeminal Inhibition - tension suppression system) appliance to relax the spastic muscles of mastication.

I would recommend that you consult with a dentist who treats TMJ or a neuromuscular dentist. Lots of good neuromuscular dentists are trained at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI).

You can find an LVI trained dentist at www.neuromuscular--dentist.com. Look for somebody who has taken several courses, not just one or two.
