  • Wisdom Teeth Extractions: I have to have 4 Impacted Wisdom Teeth out and I am told I will need Sedation. Is there another option besides Diazapam as I have come off them as I was a drug addict. I had drugs similar to this in the past and was told by family if I ever touch them again they wouldn't work as my body is too used to them now. I am too scared to tell my Dentist as this is what he has. Should I go somewhere else to have them out? ...Visitor from New Zealand     (answer)

  • Toothache caused by wisdom tooth? I had a sharp pain in my back teeth right side only a few months back so I went to dentist and was told I had "slight" receeding gums on that side and to use sensodyne toothpaste. It was also noted that a wisdom tooth was coming through. I went and got the sensodyne and have been using it since the pain went away until last week. Now my jaw on that same side, both top and bottom, constantly aches and I get a sharp pain in my teeth. With top and bottom if I suck my cheek, it is painful. I can't eat on that side at all as it feels like my teeth are wobbly. I get a sharp pain through my jaw if I chew on that side. Is this caused by the wisdom tooth or the sensitivity or both? What can I do to stop it? ...Visitor from Portsmouth     (answer)

  • Swelling in Wisdom Tooth Extraction Area: I had my bottom wisdom teeth extracted between 5 and 6 weeks ago. Over the past 3-4 days, I've noticed a strange growth or swelling that has appeared at my right-side excavation point. It does not hurt, and is smaller than the actual excavation point. Ever since I noticed this swelling, I've felt sick (stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing) and it has gotten worse over the last few days. I guess I'm curious as to how dangerous, if at all, this small growth is, and if it is somehow related to my recent sickness. ...Visitor from Brooklyn     (answer)

  • Wisdom teeth extraction: I had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted almost a week ago (tomorrow will be a week), and I can see the stitches on the bottom left extraction site but not the bottom right. • I am a 61 year old female. I have a wisdom tooth on top but none ever came through on the bottom. I am new to the area and the new dentist I went to wants to pull the wisdom tooth because he said it will continue to grow and give me an ulcer on my gum on the bottom because it will grow into the bottom gum since there is no tooth there. I see a dentist every 6 months and no one has ever mentioned this to me before. Is it really necessary to have this tooth pulled if I don't have any issues? All my teeth are within the 2 - 3 range when the hygenist measures my gums. ...Visitor from Sarasota     (answer)

  • Wisdom tooth extraction and bone graft: I'm a 66 year old female in good health and have some periodontal disease. After dental cleaning and x-rays, my dentist determined that a lower wisdom tooth has a cavity, needs extraction and bone graft. He also said a 2nd wisdom tooth needs the same procedures, although no cavity on the second one. Is the bone graft necessary, should the procedures be performed by an oral surgeon? ...Visitor from Mission Viejo CA     (answer)

  • I had my wisdom teeth (all 4) last month. One was difficult to remove and the surgeon had to dig into the bone to remove it. Two weeks later, I was admitted to the hospital for surgery due to a VERY painful abscess. Three days after that I was released and then put on Keflex. Still on the meds now. I have been unable to really open my mouth for about 3 weeks now...even though I have been doing the exercises. I can still only eat soft foods. I can barely get a utensil in my mouth! I have lost 12 lbs. Also, and I'll try to explain this the best I can...but when I do eat...the first bite or two, it's like my salivary glands go crazy and I have this intense paralyzing pain that radiates up to my ears. ...Visitor from NC     (answer)

Oral surgeon said it looked great no dry socket. Woke up third week on Monday with tight jaw and teeth pain in all my uppers on that side. Went to ER, and back to oral surgeon, then to regular dentist. No one could find a cavity or any dental problems. This pain is the worst I have ever felt. Percocet and Vicodine will not take the pain away. Where should I go next, it hurts so bad like a huge cavity and a candy bar in it! plus the tight sore jaw. Please help. What can I do to get some kind of relief since no one is open to see me on the weekends. When I went to the hostial they would not give me anything to relieve the pain, which was a waste of $300 or more. • My brother had his wisdom teeth extracted 1 1/2 months ago. He is 37 and is in general good health. A serious infection followed on one side of his face. After tests, it was treated as an anaerobic infection and the Dr. prescribed Flagyl. When the infection was gone, he was still unable to open his mouth. An MRI indicated that both of his jaws were dislocated. The Dr. did a procedure that manipulated the bottom jaw back into place. Initially, it was thought to work, but his jaw is once again unable to open to any more than insert a straw and sip. He is able to insert only about 3 or 4 popsicle sticks. The Dr. now thinks that perhaps the meniscus is no longer there and needs to be replaced through needles into both sides of the face. He can just barely open his mouth enough to take miniscule bites of food. Any information or insight you may have would be appreciated.     (answer)

  • I had all wisdom teeth pulled 4 days ago. The pain I was experiencing was not that bad so I did not use the Lorcet prescribed to me. The next night only my right side started to swell. It became so swollen that I was crying and the Lorcet was not working. I called in on an emergency to see the doctor on Saturday. He said that I may have some blood in the area and he has to drain it. The swelling got worse two days later. I went to see him again and this time he said it is infected. He had to put me to sleep because the pain was so unbearable that he could not do the work. He then gave me Cleocin, more Lorcet and told me to rinse with regular water and put heat on the area. It is now one day later and the swelling has moved to the lower cheek (jawline area), the bottom of my chin and throat. I am not sure what to do. He wants to see me again but I am scared that he is not doing the right thing for me. Everyone is telling me to use icepacks and salt water but him. Please Help! ...Visitor from NY     (answer)

  • I am a 21 year old female. My bottom two wisdom teeth are impacted and need an oral surgeon for removal. The top two teeth are being pulled in the middle of January. My question is this: I have been on antibiotics off and on for about a year now. At the present time I am taking amoxil. I am having an unbelievable amount of pain to the point that all I want to do is sit and cry. I have had problems with my wisdom teeth for over a year but the pain has never been this severe. Also the top two teeth have severe decay and have chipped within the last month. Is there something else I could be doing until I have them extracted? Any pain medications I could be taking? ... Visitor from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan Canada     (answer)

  • All of my wisdom teeth are in and I have slight pain occasionally. My upper right one lost some of the tooth about a year ago and it kinda has a hole in it that I can stick my tongue into. Lately I have had numerous sinus infections, and my right tonsil has gotten an infection. Just curious if that tooth could be a main reason for this, my doctor seems to just shrug it off. ...Visitor from PA     (answer)

  • I have a lower wisdom tooth that is impacted and needs to come out. That I am sure of but my dentist says that one above it needs to come out as well because it will eventually drop since it will have no support once the lower tooth is gone. I have a few questions regarding this. 1. How likely is the upper tooth to drop? 2. How soon after the lower tooth is removed? 3. What problems can I expect if I choose not to have the upper tooth removed? 4. Is there ever a reason not to have the upper tooth removed if there are no other problems with it? Having one removed is more than I care to go through. ...Visitor from OH     (answer)

  • I have tooth decay on the side of my back-top wisdom tooth. It started about 5 years ago when my dentist's clamp slipped and cut a chunk out of my gum. The decay is below the gumline. Now the tooth hurts badly, and the hole in the side and back of it is quite large. Me dentist referred me to another doctor to do an extraction. When a dentist/oral surgeon extracts this tooth, will they also cut away the "pulp" from inside the tooth? Will they sew the tooth socket closed or do they leave it open to heal on it's own? And what are the chances that my teeth will move to fill up the space left from removing this tooth, thus giving me teeth that cannot "mesh" together from top to bottom? ...Visitor from IL     (answer)

  • I am 39 years old and still have my wisdom teeth (impacted). I have not experienced any problems with them beofre, but suspect they may be the root (no pun intended) of my current problems. I have been experiencing headaches recently and they have become more and more frequent. A few weeks ago, my face, just below my eye, became numb. The numbness eventually worked it's way across to the other side of my face, but never went above my eyes to my forehead area. The numbness felt like novacaine when it wears off. I have since had some tingling in my check and mouth areas as well as the headaches. I was naturally concerned about this occurance and visited my Doctor, but we have yet to determine the reason for this occurance. Could this be caused by my impacted wisdom teeth? It has been quite sometime since I have seen x-rays of them, but I believe they are horizontally impacted, but I am not positive about that. Any information or advice you can offer is greatly appreciated. ...Visitor from CA     (answer)

  • I have both of my upper Wisdom teeth and am 45. A few years ago my dentist did a Panorex to check the status of my Wisdom teeth as they had never shown up on any previous films. They appeared have grown into my sinus area and he refered me to an oral surgeon. This Doctor looked at the films and told me it would cause too much damage to have them removed and said to live with them. I have since sent the info to several other doctors with the same results. I am having problems with very severe sinus infections that take months to clear. My regular doctor feels that the problem may be steming from the teeth and their position. As I have no desire to live on antibotics it would seem that something should be done. Who do I go to? ENT? Another Oral Surgeon? Are there any brave souls out there willing to take this on and why are they so reluctant to preform this procedure? I currently have another sinus infection which they have been trying to treat for a couple of months now. ...Visitor from IL     (answer)

  • I was having severe pain in the left side of my face with swelling. My jaws also were nearly closed forcing me to take liquid food. I went to an ENT and he gave me strong antibiotics and advised me hot fomentation. This aggraveted the pain and swelling. Now I have been to a dentist and he has advised me hot wet compress and antibiotics and pain killers. There was improvement for three days but now the pain and swelling have again started and I cannot open my jaws beyond 1 inch. My jaw X-ray shows 3 impacted wisdom teeth but the region of main problem top left is the area where the wisdom tooth is missing. The doctor says that is due to dry fomentation a growth has occured and the jaw is unable to align, though he has not ruled out any other reason for this growth. Now it is more than 3 weeks and I am desperate. Please help me. Do I need to go in for further procedures, like biopsy of the growth? ...Visitor from Lucknow, U.P., India     (answer)

  • Delayed treatment causing more problems? Two days ago I had a filling replaced in my lower wisdom tooth. The filling had been missing for about 3 months. My dentist told me the cavity was very deep and if I had any more trouble with the tooth that he would recommend extraction. I have had fillings before and I understand that there is some soreness and sensitivity for a few weeks afterwards, but my tooth and ear has been bothering me all night and all day. I shined a flashlight on it and notice that there is a small amount of pink next to the filling. I swabbed it with a Q-tip and it looks to me to be blood. I was told they can't do much for me because I'm pregnant and in my first Trimester. So he prescribed me Tylenol 3 for the pain as well as amoxicillin and a mouthwash called PerioGard (Chlorhexidine Gluconate). Its been 3 days and I can barely open my mouth and can't close it all the way either due to the swelling of my gums. The pain is overwhelming. • Difficult Wisdom Tooth Removal: I had my wisdom tooth pulled and I'm afraid it was done rather harshly. My jaw is still sore and I cannot open it. I have cuts on my lips, on the same side the tooth was pulled. My dentist kept yelling at me to open my mouth wider but I had it as wide it can go which then his helper just pried it open which then has given me such a horrible headache. It took about 24 hours for it to stop bleeding because there was never any stitches placed in. I also heard a lot of cracks like 7 or 8 loud cracks and it took about 1 hour to remove it with no breaks for me to relax myself and my jaw.
