FAQ:  Trigeminal Neuralgia

  • TN pain and upper dentures: I was told that I had TMJ disorder and ended up having a full upper denture put in. A couple of months later, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I have had the TN pain for several months and have been taking Neurontin and Nortriptylene for the pain. Works well at night, but as soon as I get up and put my dentures in the pain starts up again. On a scale of 1-10, it's about a 7. I'm so frustrated and confused, as I can't take the drugs during the day as they make me so groggy I can't function. Any advice? ...Visitor from NV     (answer)

  • I did contact a dentist in my area, but had a general question for this forum. My condition Trigeminal Neuralgia, although not a dental condition, presents itself many times with dental symptoms - toothache, jaw soreness and stiffness, gums hurting, etc. It wasn't until I had the classic TN symptom of electrical impulse pain to my cheek, lips, and nose that the dentist and neurologist were able to diagnose it as TN instead of TMJ and other dental problems. It does become a dental issue because it is nearly impossible to brush your teeth due to the intense pain that it triggers. ...Visitor from TX     (answer)

  • A few years I began experiencing shock like pain on the left side of my face, the pain goes directly into my top molar, this is the worst pain I have ever felt.I went to several dentists and allowed one to perform a root canal even though she found nothing wrong, however, that didn't help at all. I thought I might have a sinus infection the doctor prescribed antibiotic which didn't help at all. I had CT and MRI done, they both were negative. I would like to add; this pain comes while brushing my teeth, eating, talking, if the sheeet brush agaisnt my face it starts. Could this be a sinus infection? Also, I did see a ENT he said it was a sinus infection but it wouldn't cause my tooth to hurt, which I didn't buy. Please help! ...Visitor from OH     (answer)

  • I was 30 years old and diagnoses with Trigeminal Neuralgia on the left side. I was in a car accident and after that TMJ of both sides occurred. However recently the TMJ of left side is by far worse. I have been having increased episodes of TMJ pain on the left side and my upper left teeth have been hurting also. Is it related to tmj or the neuralgia (which is back after being gone for 6 years)? I am back on Tegretol with many break-throughs though. Are tmj and trigeminal related? ...Visitor from NY     (answer)

  • Trigeminal Neuralgia / TMD diagnoses: I was diagnosed recently as having TMD and a night guard was made by my dentist. It did not help and my condition worsened. The pain is still in my jaw, but spread to m ear (right side) and now the pain is triggered by air conditioning, cold air, breezes, and even driving in the car. I have seen a dentist, periodontist, and endodontist and all x-rays were normal. I went to see a neurologist who says I have trigeminal neuralgia but not TMJ. Can I have both at the same time? I don't know what to do next as the Trileptal I'm taking (a week now) isn't working. ...Visitor from FL     (answer)

  • Replace teeth with dentures? I am considering getting dentures. My dentist is not recommending them because of my trigeminal neuralgia. Do most people with TN have pain with dentures? It seems it would be less pain than having to go through dental work. ...Visitor from NJ     (answer)

  • I had a filling done on a lower tooth about 2 months ago. Ever since then I cannot chew on it at all. I went back to the dentist and he said it was the trigeminal nerve. I have severe new daily persistent headaches for 3 years now. I am very hypersensitive to every procedure. Last nite I bit on a little kernel of popcorn and went through the roof. My nose now hurts as does my ear, upper and lower teeth on left side where I had the filling done. My eye even hurts. I cant take it, besides dealing with headaches. What type of doctor would you go to for the alcohol injections? Is it an oral surgeon? What side effects are there to alcohol injections ...Visitor from NJ     (answer)

  • Implant removal: I had an implant about 4 years ago (molar, lower left, second in from the back). I have been in constant pain. Dentists have said the implant and crown look fine, but the pain hasn't stopped. I was then diagnosed with Trigeminal Nerve Disorder and put on Neurontin and now Trileptal. Okay for the night, but in the day - more pain. Now a dentist has told me the titanium implant may be the problem but most dentists I talk to say that removing it after 4 years would be disfiguring. All I know is that this level of pain is unbearable and I can't take the meds in the day if I need to work. If there's a way to take the implant out, I would like to explore it. Please advise. ...Visitor from CA     (answer)
