  • Pain after removal of decayed roots: I had RCT done on an upper left molar tooth which decayed inside and came off. So, I got the decayed roots removed 5 days ago. However, a part of root is left behind as it was decayed and close to sinus and stitches were done. Now, I feel throbbing pulsuating pain in upper left side which goes to lower jaw. Pain is not constant. I have another tooth with RCT behind it. Can this pain be because of the root left? What should be my next step? ...Visitor from India     (answer)

  • Wisdom Root tip left in on upper left side: I had my wisdom tooth out over a year and a half ago. I got a dry socket and was in so much pain. I got antibiotics and then I was fine, but the last 7 months I've been in so much pain with my ears, neck, face, jaw bone and bad headaches. Then I find out just yesterday after an x-ray that the root tip was left in. Could this pain be caused by that root and can it be sitting on a nerve maybe? ...Visitor from Ireland     (answer)

  • Jaw, gum and ear pain: 3 months ago I had a tooth removed at lower back of my mouth. For 2 and half months things were great no pain at all. Then the spot where I had the tooth extracted started hurting like the bad tooth was still there. The pain seems to spread through the whole right side of my jaw and even causes my ear to hurt. This has been going on for 2 months now. I have been to the doctor; they gave me strong antibiotics thinking it might be an infection. After taking all the medicine the pain has not gotten better. Any suggestion of what is causing this pain? ...Visitor from Monroe     (answer)

  • Gum pain from dental surgery: About 3 months ago I had a tooth removed the old fashioned way. The dentist took plyers and pulled it out. Then after I had very bad pain, even the meds didn't help. So I went back and found out he left a piece of tooth in there. Not only that, the piece was in my sinus cavity. I had that removed, waited about a week after, and I was still in pain. The dentist said it's nothing to worry about because the stitches are dissolvable. Last month I went back and he said he didn't see anything but a cavity in a tooth. My 9 year old and I can still see the stitches and the two dentists I went to can't find them. What do I need to do to get them out and what kind of dentist do I need to see? ...Visitor from PA     (answer)

  • Root tip left: My oral surgeon attempted to get the root tip left over 20 years ago when my wisdom teeth were taken out and removed part of my jaw. He was unable to locate the root tip and said the only other way to get the root tip is through surgery. He suggested he could go through the outside of my cheek and face area. Is this the only way? I have incredible pain. Diagnosed with fibromayalgia and RA several years ago after the 2nd oral surgery in attmepts to remove the root tip and wondering if this could be related. ...Visitor from CO     (answer)

  • Leaving Root Tips is OK? I had an extraction of tooth #5 about 5 months ago. When I went for a consultation for options of implant, fixed bridge, etc., it was determined by 3D x-ray that the oral surgeon had left the 2 root tips behind. The consultation doc said they should be removed before anything is done over them. The surgeon who removed the tooth said they don't need to be removed; that a brdge could be put over it or if he did an implant they would come out in the process [even though he doesn't have the technology of a 3D x-ray to check]. My regular dentist said he trusts the judgment of the specialist who extracted the tooth. Is there a standard involving left behind root tips? ...Visitor from Washington DC     (answer)

  • Pain after extraction: Almost 1 year ago I went to the dentist for a check up and he found a deep cavity, he told me that there might be a chance it would have to have a root canal. Well it did, but instead, for money reasons I told him just to pull it (it was my last tooth top left) then a couple weeks later the tooth beside it hurt so he did a root canal and found 1 dead nerve. That happened 7 months ago. Since then I have had numerous on and off pain mostly a dull ache but sometimes sharp and severe. I have been to the dentist few times since then he gave me some meds for pain. Vvalium worked for little while now it is back. It is not sensitive to cold but pressure hurts but mostly comes from nowhere now also hurting in cheek. ...Visitor from VA     (answer)

  • Root tip extraction for implant or partial: I broke off my upper front tooth #8, leaving a small part the tooth blow the gum line. The dentist scheduled me for an extraction of the #8 root tip and evaluation for an implant. If I decide to change my mind about an implant and go with a partial, will I still need an extraction of the root tip? I have a temporary partial now for the same tooth (#8) pending the implant. ...Visitor from CA     (answer)

  • Residual Pain after extractions: I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out almost 2 months ago. The lower right wisdom tooth was sitting sideways and it had to be cut out. Now I have some pain on the side of the gum line by my tongue. Is this due to my surgeon cutting it out? I notice it more when I eat something solid. How long will it take to go away? ...Visitor from PA     (answer)
