  • Popping my jaw: When I was roughly about 7-8 years old my jaw felt really tight like a pressure build up, and I pushed it near my ear from side to side and it made a loud pop. It was instant relief. I have done this everyday for over 20 yrs at least once a day. It does not hurt one bit. I have been told that I am constantly moving my jaw side to side when in deep thought trying to figure something out for work or whatever and I don't even realize it. I do not do those types of drugs so its not from that, although some people assume that's why. I do notice that I move my jaw side to side when I feel like there is like a pressure build up feeling, and then I pop it. Is this normal? Again there is no pain at all. ... • Jaw Popping, Ear Ache: I am 28 years old. Recently, I was chewing gum and using a qtip. The same day I noticed an ear ache and loud pop in jaw every time I chewed or bit down hard on my back left teeth. I have a slight jaw ache and mild headaches, but am wondering if it's because I am aware of it now and "testing it". My jaw has not locked up and I am still able to open wide with no clicking. It's only when I bite down hard. It is becoming annoying. This has been going on 4 days. I saw a dentist and had x-rays and he saw nothing wrong. Would I benefit with a mouth guard from a local store or will this worsen the problem and can this go away eventually? Is TMJ considered even though I am able to open wide with no clicking/locking? ... Visitor from CA     (answer)

  • Jaw cracking: I've got a bad habit that I can't seem to shake: I crack my jaw. It started about a year ago and I'm trying desperately to stop. I don't do it because I want to, I find myself doing it subconsciously because my jaw feels like it needs to crack. It only cracks on the right side. I'm worried that I'm doing damage to my joint and could be looking at TMJ or some other problem in the future. I'm also worried that it is affecting my ear as the cracking is right next to it and sometimes my ear feels weird after I've been cracking my jaw all night. More importantly, how can I stop? I know this can't be healthy. ... Visitor from MA     (answer)

  • My jaw has been popping when I wake up in the morning. It doesn't pop throughout the day or while I am eating, like some of your other FAQ's. Lately it has been getting worse and I have been waking up in the middle of the night and with my jaw hurting and needing to be popped back into place. It is getting harder to pop it back into place. I do have a nightguard and it is not helping. I am staring to feel some pain in the joint after it pops back. What is causing this and what can I do to stop it? ... Visitor from CA     (answer)
