Repairing Tooth Enamel

  • Losing enamel: I have always had great teeth. This year my doctor changed alot of my meds due to midical issues and I am now losing the enamel on several of my teeth. Is there anything over-the-counter (OTC) to help with restoring the enamel or what would you suggest for it? ...Visitor from Meridian     (answer)

  • My tooth enamel is getting see through at the bottom of my teeth. I think this is due to me using whitening strips. How can I replace this enamel? What treatments are available and can I still use the strips? ...Visitor from Wales     (answer)

  • My question has to do with the lack of protective enamel in the tooth area exposed by receding gums. I've always had healthy teeth, but now I develop cavities near my gum line. Do toothpastes with potassium nitrite really help? Does anything rebuild enamel? ...Visitor from NJ     (answer)

  • Peeling enamel: A friend has been having a problem whereby the enamel on her teeth is peeling off (no bulimia or anything like that involved). She has seen two different dentists, both of whom say that that is not possible. But it is happening. Do you know what could be causing it? ...Visitor from CA     (answer)

  • I have always had sensitivity to cold my whole life, but I never had a cavity until I was 22. I thought I had great teeth. I'm now 30 and have had about 8 fillings. Why the sudden increase in tooth decay in adulthood? Is my enamel too weak? I drink more acidic beverages than I did as a child (occasional coffee- NEVER have consumed sodas). My theory is that it might be related to my Colgate advanced whitening toothpaste - could it be degrading my enamel? I've used it for over 6 yrs now. What can I put on my teeth to strengthen them? I just switched to sensodyne whitening. Why isn't my dentist recommending flouride rinse or something? Why are my teeth less healthy in adulthood? ...Visitor from CA     (answer)

  • I have scraped some enamel off two of my teeth. Not the whole tooth but the upper part and the exposed root. Is there any product that can regenerate the enamel? ...Visitor from Canada     (answer)

  • My dentist told me about a product that puts enamel back on teeth. I was teaching school when a 19 year old decided to hit me with his book bag. I lost three molars and now have a bridge. All the meds for injections were tetracycline. I lost enamel and my teeth became light yellow, a side effect of tetracycline. Do you know of a this product or a better product to put enamel back on teeth? I can't find it anywhere. ...Ed in TX     (answer)

  • Enamel Loss - Erosion: I seem to be be losing enamel on my two top front teeth. Also some of my teeth have ridges around the gum line which makes them sensitive when I brush. Is there a way to correct this? I have been using Crest Whitestrips... Is it safe to do so? ...Visitor from CA     (answer)

  • Transparent Teeth: Both of my front teeth are becoming increasingly transparent along the bottom. I can actually see through the entire bottom of one tooth and half of the bottom of the other other. The teeth seem to be slowly wearing away where they have become transparent as the tooth that is half normal (not transparent) is longer on that half then on the other half that is transparent and longer then the other fromt tooth which is transparent along the entire bottom. I'm only 31 yrs old and I'm not sure if this is normally something associated with old age. ...Visitor from NY     (answer)

  • Calcium Deposits: I have calcium deposits right in the middle of my two front teeth. What is the best way to get rid of them? ...Visitor from NY     (answer)

  • Dental Enamel Hypoplasia: I am currently being evaluated for celiac disease and the term dental-enamel hypoplasia came up. I am 32 years old. After the birth of my first child four years ago, I have had severe yellowing of my teeth along with vertical cracks in the enamel of my front teeth. Would this constitute dental-enamel hypoplasia? What kind of dentist should I seek to evaluate and repair the cracks? ...Visitor from IL     (answer)

  • Does mouth wash, used regularly, cause loss of enamel? ...Visitor from AZ     (answer)

  • Effect of Purging on Enamel: I used to purge and my dentist was concerned of the enamel loss on the backside of my teeth. Most of my teeth are transparent and my dentist said it is the worst he has seen in 30 yrs. I do not purge anymore but I seem to still keep losing enamel for some other reason. I have been chewing nicorette gum for almost 8 months now. Could this be the reason why I continue to lose enamel? Does enamel ever regenerate itself over time? ...Visitor from OH     (answer)

  • Ameliogenesis Imperfecta I have ameliogenesis imperfecta and last year had 10 porcelain veneers put on my top teeth. They are a beautiful shape, but the colour is gross. The doctor said that the veneers are a window to the teeth....but if the teeth underneath are yellow then why accent that with the veneers? I am going back this month to get 4 top ones which cracked replaced and my bottom 6 teeth done, but I don't want them done unless they will be white. He says they used the whiteness everything ....but can't you bleach the teeth underneath first? I can't live with this colour, in the age of white teeth! What can I do? ...Visitor from Ontario Canada     (answer)

I take excellent care of my teeth and have a very low sugar diet. My last visit to the hygenist was 3 weeks ago and everything looked fine. What could possibly be causing this problem? ...Visitor from NM     (answer)

  • 10 year old daughter has no teeth enamel: My daughter now is 10 years old. When she started to get her permenant set of teeth, they were having no enamel on them. Till today the enamel has not built and day by day her teeth are worsening and getting more yellow with white lines clearly visible on them. Since one year she has started developing brown stains on her teeth. ...Visitor from Tanzania     (answer)

  • See through teeth enamel: I noticed recently that I can now see through my teeth (all my front teeth; halfway from the gums to the tips). The part that is still more opaque is quite yellowed. I am wondering if I will cause more damage if I use white strips? Also, I have always had white spots on my two front top teeth. They come and go (even now with the thin enamel). They show up more in the winter with dry air, but they are not always in the same spots on my teeth. I find that all that confusing. Can you tell me why they would come and go and show in different spots at different times? ...Visitor from MI     (answer)

  • Eroding teeth and beer: Can drinking beer or lager damage teeth in the same way as fizzy drinks such as coke? If my teeth were thinning, at what stage would I need to think about investing in caps or veneers? ...Visitor from Nottingham UK     (answer)

  • I have always taken care of my teeth, but was recently diagnosed with acid reflux disease. I can also tell that I clench my teeth at night. What can I do to protect my teeth? I already have noticeable indentions in the back of my top front teeth that have left sharp edges near the gumline. Do I need a night guard? Could that pool the acid around my teeth? I am taking Zegerid, a medication to reduce the production of acid, but is it enough to protect my teeth against stomach acid? ...Visitor from MS     (answer)
