  • Reline or Implant Dentures: My father is 76 years old. He has lost bone in the lower jaw, affecting his lower denture. It bothers him when he eats. A dentist recommends an implant but at his age and diabetic condition I believe it is not a good idea. Do you think that a reline would be a good solution so he does not suffer any more when he eats?...Visitor from NM     (answer)

  • My father is 87 and has Alzheimer's. He lost his lower dentures and I fear it could happen with his uppers. Can new upper dentures be made from a mold of his current uppers's? He cannot sit thru a visit and I am afraid he may lose the only dentures he has left so I want to be prepared for that possibility? ...Visitor from NC     (answer)

  • Lower Jaw Pain: My father is 63 and is a cancer survivor and had extensive chemo and radiation about 20 yrs ago. For the past 3 weeks he has had lower jaw pain from the front to back teeth and describes it as an intense ache. The dentist said it will go away and his teeth are just sensitive. The problem is just getting worse. He has had jaw bone deterioration due to his treatments and has had teeth pulled, etc., but no work on the side that is bothering him. His dentist has done x-rays and nothing shows up out of the ordinary. What could this be? Could this be something specific? Could it be an absess...do they show up on x-rays? ...Visitor from TX     (answer)

  • My father, 84 years old is suffering from severe gum pain. all his teeth are false. He's been x-rayed, and the local dentists say it's caused by the nerves. He's taking tegretol (carbamazepine, cabramazepine?), flanax and neurobion (vitamin b complex). Somehow, the pain is relieved but when it attacks it is too severe. His entire body tightens in trying to bear the pain. Sometimes he covers his face to hide his tears. Is there any cure for this? What is the best medication to relieve the pain without the side effects of nausea and stomach ache? ...Visitor from the Phillipines     (answer)

  • Too Old for Mini Implants? I am a 76 year young senior who lost my teeth when I was 40 years old. I had bone construction about 10 years ago and am now having problems keeping my lower teeth in. Much difficulty chewing. Is it possible to have implants for a person my age? I realize the bone deteriotion and the expense for someone in my situation, but there must be answers somewhere out there. I retired and still a very active senior citizen. ...Visitor from MI     (answer)

  • Implantology for Senior Citizen: Is it possible to do teeth implantation in somone 81 or 82 years old? My heart itself is O.K. I had a cypher stent in LAD about two yers ago. I have had no problems since then. My Blood Pressure is normal. ...Visitor from Israel     (answer)

  • Gum Tenderness: I am a senior and have only a few teeth. My gums are almost always sore. My dentist recommended rinsing with epsom salts for relief, this seldom works. I went to a periodontist who found nothing unusual. I am going to have the gums cleaned next month. I want to know if there is a specific blood test that should be done to determine if there is some underlying medical condition that is causing this constant soreness. .... Visitor from NY     (answer)

  • Senior with Sore Gums: My gums slough off when the dentist examines or cleans my teeth. After each cleaning I experience severe gum pain. Epsom salt seldom helps. The dentist suggested rinsing with milk of magnesium, which worked initially. Now, several months later, my gums have become extremely painful after eating crunchy salad. Nothing seems to relieve the pain which is below the removable bridge line. I need something to heal the gums. I am a senior with a thyroid condition. Last year I was checked by a peridontist who found nothing wrong. ...Visitor from NY     (answer)

  • I'm 62 years old. My teeth are not in the best condition but I desperately want to save them. My problem is that I have been told I can't have implants because of severe bone loss and many teeth are loose. Can't there be something done with veneers or caps? I can't use a bridge that goes over the top of my mouth causes severe gagging. I was hoping there may be a solution for me. I'm old but I'd like to have a nice natural smile. Not dentures. Dentists don't seem to care about seniors too much but we still want to look nice. ... Visitor from IL     (answer)
