Question:
Effects of wearing a palate expander: Does it hurt to get a palate expander on?

What does it do?

I'm worried that I won't be able to go to basketball practice or play in my game because of the pain. Does it affect how you talk?

I am singing in an audition next week and I want to actually be able to sing. ... Visitor from TN

Answer:
A palatal expander normally does not create discomfort, but as the appliance is turned you will experience some pressure.

What does it do? The use of an expander is an effective way to widen the upper jaw bone.

We as orthodontists usually recommend this type of treatment in conditions where the upper jaw bone is more narrow than the lower jaw bone. The expander will very rapidly improve your bite.

Will it affect how you talk? Yes, for a short period of time and then you will adapt. It may, however affect your singing next week.
