Braces after bone grafting: My daughter was in a car accident and she shattered her jaw. Five months after initial surgery, she had bone grafting from her hip onto her upper jaw where there are 2 teeth missing.
It's been 6 weeks since her last surgery and the dentist wants to put her braces on now. Is it too soon to do it? He has explained that braces won't touch bone graft at all. We are unsure whether it's too soon though. ... Visitor from Lakewood
Repositioning the teeth while the graft material is still osseointegrating shouldn't be a problem. Combining bone grafts, implant placements AND on-going ortho straightening is not uncommon.
Getting a 2nd consult with a Prosthodontist with 15+ years experience may offer some peace of mind, though. Prosthodontists are the "masters" of the adult bite.
