Braces Ask The Dentist Marie Schweinebraten Question:
Can you get braces after a bone grafting procedure or gum grafting procedure? ...Visitor from GA

Yes, it is possible to get braces after having a bone graft or gum graft procedure. There are a few concerns, however, that must be addressed.

First, a gum graft should heal for at least 6-8 weeks before proceeding with any orthodontic work. If impressions are taken, I would wait at least three months.

If a bone graft is done, then a longer waiting period of 5-6 months before they start to move your teeth is recommended.

In both cases, the areas will need to be monitored closely while the orthodontic treatment is completed and teeth are being moved. X-rays may be needed at certain stages also, especially after a bone graft.

When the braces are removed, then I would recommend a complete periodontal examination to make sure that no other treatment is needed to prevent further gum problems.
