Braces and Overbite Ask The Orthodontist Richard Winter Question:
17 years of braces: I'm dating a guy who is 32 and has had his braces on since he was 15.

He said he never got around to getting them off.

What kind of damage can leaving braces on for this long do? I don't believe he's been to the dentist in a while because I'm sure a dentist would have recommended getting them off. ...Visitor from IL

Answer:
While long term use of braces can create plaque and food traps resulting in decay, gum disease, loss of enamel and bad breath--the answer lies in your boyfriend's oral hygiene.

If he brushes, flosses everyday, uses fluoride mouth rinses daily, there may be no residual damage.

If, however, he doesn't take care of his mouth, all of the things I listed above can occur. The final results will be evident when the braces are removed.
