FAQ:  Excessive Soft Drinks

This 28 y/o male patient presented with extensive destruction of his teeth due to a history of poor oral hygiene, and excessive consumption of Mountain Dew.

Almost every tooth suffered from extensive decay or had large multiple silver fillings that were failing.

In addition, his bite was over closed (collapsed) due to loss of tooth structure, there was excessive display of gum tissue, and moderate to severe inflammation of the gingival (gums).

To make matters more complicated, he had a severe gag reflex which had to be dealt with every time a procedure was performed.

Treatment consisted of educating him regarding the effects of soda on teeth, and the importance of good oral hygiene. He went through an initial periodontal regimen of root planning and scaling and oral hygiene instruction.

Control of active decay was first on the agenda. Those teeth that would be saved had decay removed and temporary sedative fillings placed.

The upper anterior six teeth were removed. The gum tissue and bone were reshaped to minimize the gummy smile and then six implants were placed. A removable temporary prosthesis was placed to wear during the implant healing phase.

His second molars on the bottom were extracted due to extensive decay and partly because of the near impossibility of restoring them with his gag reflex.

The lower anterior teeth were restored with porcelain veneers after the gum shaping. Porcelain fused to metal crowns were placed on the remaining posterior teeth.

Extreme Cosmetic Makeover Full mouth veneers After the healing phase for the upper implants, the upper posterior teeth were prepared for porcelain/ metal crowns. The six upper anterior implants were restored with splinted (connected) porcelain/metal crowns.

The patient was placed on a hygiene recall of every three months. Care of his rehabilitated mouth was reviewed and use of a fluoride rinse was prescribed.

The patient has a much improved self esteem and more self confidence.
