Has my dentist given me gum disease? I have visited my dentist a few times and noticed his gloves smelled very bad. I have had a lot of root canal treatments and wondered if he could have given me this bacterial infection.

Did he change his gloves before treating me so could I have been given this infection via his gloves? ...Visitor from UK

Many brands of latex based surgical gloves have an offending odor. Dentists typically use a fresh pair of gloves for each patient. It would be difficult to imagine a dentist removing a pair of "used gloves" and then re-handling them to put them back on. THAT would expose the dentist.

Surgical gloves protect the dentist as well as protecting the patient.
