Root Canals Ask The Endodontist Christopher McFarland Question:
Root Canal Overfill: I had a root canal on a bottom left side molar (#18).

Can it take longer than a month to heal? It was completed 6 weeks ago. I have been back to both the endodontist and dentist and xrays show it is healing.

My dentist says overfill will be absorbed by body in time. But I still have inflammation around gums by tooth, it comes and goes. ...Visitor from NY

Sorry you continue to have a problem.

You didn't mention how long the tooth had bothered you prior to seeking treatment. That can effect how long it takes to heal.

It sounds like you have two people looking at this so I would be surprised if anything obvious like a fracture had been missed or the possibility of a secondary canal inside the tooth.

I would agree that cement overfill will be resorbed and shouldn't be a problem long term.

I'd suggest they just check the bite, try to keep it clean to minimize any inflamation, and take anti-inflamatory meds like Advil 400mg three times a day for about 5 days. Hopefully in a week or ten days everything will calm down.
