Broken File? Choice: Endodontist vs Dentist

I had a root canal done on tooth #14 in 2002, then it got infected again and retreated in 2007, at which time an x-ray was taken showing a dark shadow on this tooth root.

In Dec 2012, an X-ray during routine check-up still shows the dark shadow, no worse, no better. I have no symptoms at all. Could this dark shadow be a benign scar and can be left alone without causing major trouble, or could it be a chronicle abscess?

My gum has been in perfect condition for years since the retreat. Should I take the tooth out now for peace of mind? ...Visitor from VA

The best way of getting a 2nd opinion of whether the shadow is a mere x-ray artifact, or not, is to get a 2nd x-ray or, better yet, a ctscan of the tooth by a periodontist.

There may be no need to extract the tooth if you are symptom free and there are no "hidden" issues.
