Disappearing upper lip: I have had my dentures going on 2 years (this is my 3rd set since 2001). My gums are barely there.
On top of this I am losing weight. I used to have a pretty smile. Now I always look like I am mad . It looks like my top lip disappears into my mouth.
Is there anything that can be done? I am 66 years old. ... Visitor from AZ
Yours is not an unusual problem. What happens is two things.
One, the teeth are moved back in closer to the bone so that they are more stable when the base of the denture doesn't fit that well. Dentists do this to keep patients from complaining the teeth come loose when they bite on the front teeth. Moving the teeth back means they don't support your lip.
Second, the height of the denture teeth is often less than the height of your natural teeth. In other words, when you bite, your chin and nose are closer together than they were with your natural teeth. This causes wrinkle lines on your face and makes you look mad.
You need to see a Prosthodontist who specializes in dentures. They will take the time to get the teeth in the right position and take years off your appearance.
