Question:
Crowns and receding gums: I inherited soft teeth from my father and had chemotherapy 8 years ago.

My gums have receded and are worst on the crowned teeth. My dental assistant admonished me to quit brushing so hard. I switched to a sonic toothbrush and the dentist has prescribed a fluoride rinse daily.

Is it possible I am allergic to the metal in the crown? I have a crown in the front that has been replaced several times, with each dentist saying it will look better this time but the metal base is always visible. ...Visitor from FL

Answer:
It does not sound like you have an allergy to metal.

Receding gums can occur due to periodontal disease, bruxism, imbalances in the bite and excessive force when brushing.

As for the metal showing, your tooth could have been prepared differently as well as the crown. You could have had a metal crown with a porcelain margin or an entire ceramic crown with no metal.

I would talk to your dentist or find another one if he/she can not solve a simple esthetic problem.
