Bad Teeth: Porcelain Crown Failures |

Porcelain Restoration Failures
Poor bonding procedures, old bonding treatments, mismatch of porcelain products for opposing teeth, bruxing, untreated decay or leakage, failure to replace worn out bridgework or crowns can cause almost any degree of devastation to our oral health. The graphic pictures below demonstrate some of the more devastating effects of rapid, cumulative damage that otherwise could have been better managed or controlled.
This is an excellent example of what happens to a poor grade of Composite Resin Crowns over a period of time. They can hold up well, structurally, but they will invevitably darken or yellow with age. In many areas of the country, the lab fabrication processes and the protocols for treating a patient with composite crowns does not represent much of a savings. Many dentists avoid routine use of composite teeth in single units when they are able to use porcelain products for the same overall treatment cost.
Treatment options could include new composite crowns, porcelain crowns, cemented or implant supported fixed bridge, maryland bridge or partial. |

Ramped tooth decay under old improperly bonded restorations also called white composite fillings. Dental Bonding requires exact precision on every step of the treatment procedure. Any contamination from moisture from the patient's breath, the dentists water supply, air, materials or inadequate decay removal by the dentist and the restorations will fail. The patient was neglectful because the patient could obviously see that damage being done over a period of years and just did not see a dentist. There was so much internal decay to the tooth structure that root canals , crown build-ups and posts were necessary before the porcelain crowns could be placed. The gums tissue also was infected and required non surgical gum treatment. |

Bite Collapse, Missing Teeth, Deep Overbite, Decay under bonded composite fillings, bone loss in edentulous areas, superuption of lower anterior teeth and decay was under the old crowns. The patient
required root canals, gums surgery, dental implants, porcelain crowns and porcelain fixed bridges. |

Black Lines at the gums from old style Porcelain crowns done with cheap metal that oxidizes, gum recession, tooth abrasion, tooth erosion, Bad Bite, Deep overbite, rotated teeth, bone loss, history of gum disease, porcelain crowns that do not match in color or size, dentistry done in segments rather than one organized procedure. |

Composite resin veneers on the upper teeth and porcelain crowns and porcelain bridges on the lower teeth, bite was never corrected, cross bite, underbite or end to end occlusion, heavy wear on the upper
teeth because composite veneers are too soft for the lower porcelain and dental enamel also wears faster when porcelain is on the opposing arch. Especially if the porcelain was not polsihed and the patient was not wearing a night guard. The composite resin on the upper teeth has stained and is estimated to be 10 years old. Lower teeth look long due to the bone loss and tooth loss of the four lower incisor teeth. |

Uneven Wear of Porcelain vs Composite Veneers Sam Muslin, DDS, MAGD |
Full upper denture as all of the upper teeth were lost, bruxism and heavy tooth wear on the natural lower six front teeth. Side teeth have old style porcelain crowns with black lines, lower molar teeth
are missing, bone loss. Upper denture damaged natural teeth, but not porcelain restorations |

Bruxism - Bone Loss Sam Muslin, DDS, MAGD |
Unbalanced crown to root ratio. Deep overbite, upper teeth missing, bone loss, remaining upper teeth superupted making them very long, black lines at the gumline all of the porcelain crowns on the upper were not coordinated with the porcelain bridges and crowns on the lower. Bad Bite and bad dentistry. The lower teeth are one big bridge that did not fit the teeth well so you can see one of the lower front teeth rotted or decayed right out from under the bridge. |

Deep Overbite - Bone Loss Sam Muslin, DDS, MAGD |
Total bite collapse, deep over bite, loose fixed bridge on the upper left of the patient, black lines at the gums from the old porcelain crowns, failed root canals, decay between the teeth, decay under the crowns, decay under the fixed gold bridge tooth loss, |
